Is Green Board Mold-Resistant?

Has your home become damaged due to water, fire, mold, or a natural disaster?

Whether it’s affected your kitchen, bedroom, living room, or the whole house in one go, you need to make sure that you’ve done your research before getting stuck fixing the damage.

And it’s not just about replacing your favorite wallpaper or light shades – yes, they may be the bits you want to focus on, but you’ve got to think of the more mundane aspects of repairs, too.

For example, what drywall will you use to construct your interior walls and ceilings?

Let’s discuss a material called green board:

What Is Green Board?

Green board is a type of drywall that can withstand high humidity and moisture levels, making it a popular choice of material for builders and DIY enthusiasts alike. It’s also less expensive and easier to install than cement board alternatives.

However, it’s not 100% mold-resistant. Although green board paper sheets (thanks to the waxy substance on them) can help resist moisture, they can still be prone to mold and growth in severely damp atmospheres.

Green board is often used as a backing for wall panels and tiles in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms – the spaces where most moisture occurs.

Greenboard vs. Conventional Drywall

Greenboard:

  • It’s thicker than drywall: Standard drywall is either ¼” or ½” thickness, whereas green board comes in ½” and 5/8″ thickness. The infused wax makes it thicker, as it is supposed to withstand as much moisture as possible.
  • It’s easy to use: Builders and home decorators can easily install green board because it is exceptionally lightweight.
  • It has good insulation qualities: All insulation materials are measured and rated for their performance in restricting heat transfer. The rating is expressed as an R-value, and the higher the value, the greater the material’s insulating effect. Green board is renowned for having a high R-value.

Greenboard

Conventional Drywall:

  • It is more robust than a green board: Drywall is stronger when wet. The added thickness of the green board makes it weaker. However, when installed correctly, its weakness isn’t generally a problem compared to its moisture resistance.
  • It is relatively fire-resistant: Conventional drywall is typically made from gypsum pressed between two thick sheets of paper. Gypsum is a soft mineral that, on its own, isn’t flammable.
  • It is easily repairable: Conventional drywall can usually be repaired by only compromising the affected area, whether minor or significant damage. While everything naturally suffers wear and tear, drywall blemishes can be easily fixed using sandpaper, some spackling, and a putty knife.

Does Greenboard Really Work?

If you need to replace your existing drywall after mold or water damage, moisture-resistant drywall, like green board is usually a good idea.

Regular drywall will not accomplish the same level of moisture resistance. Greenboard is used in homes and offices worldwide; it is a trusted resource in the construction industry.

Preventing Mold Growth on Greenboard

There are a few ways you can prevent mold from growing on green board, including:

  • Control the room’s moisture and keep the humidity level below 60%. Install a dehumidifier to keep moisture low.
  • Dry up wet materials swiftly.
  • Improve your home’s airflow. Keep your fans on and open windows.

FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions about greenboard:

Can Greenboard Get Wet?

Even though the greenboard is water-resistant, it is not waterproof. However, it is highly efficient in bathrooms and kitchens, much more so than conventional drywall.

When installing the material, be sure not to use it as a backer for tiles in a shower or a tub surround.

Is Green Board Toxic?

Greenboard is not toxic. It’s installed in homes, offices, and storefronts across the country. Greenboard is only harmful when exposed to fire and releasing chemicals.

Drywall is much more toxic; it makes up 15% of construction and demolition waste. That waste leaches toxins and releases hydrogen sulfide gas into landfills.
